History: A Journey to Comprehensive Understanding

Ilene Power has successfully been running her own practice since 2009. Her journey in the legal profession began in 1999 as an article clerk at a law firm in Potchefstroom. Hereafter she joined a COSATU affiliated trade union as a shop steward, ultimately becoming the Head of Legal for SASBO. Her experience representing union members in national dispute forums provided her with invaluable insights. In 2002, Ilene joined SOLIDARITY Trade Union as a litigant where she had the opportunity to litigate on behalf of the union membership in all national dispute forums.

In 2007, Ilene was awarded a full scholarship to study International Labour Standards at the International Labour Organisation in Turin, Italy. This experience broadened her perspective and reinforced the need for peacemakers and proactive advocates in the world of work. Upon her return, she established the Labour Relations and International Relations Department at Solidarity to analyse the political, socio-economic and labour activities within South-Africa – focusing on constitutional labour rights research, promoting social dialogue, campaigning for social justice and enforcing international labour principles in South-Africa.

To gain a comprehensive understanding, Ilene also worked from an employer perspective, joining Investec Asset Management to develop social security law and fair-trade investment portfolios for South-African institutional funds. From 2010 she further served as an Employee Relations Manager for a public entity with 1000 employees and hereafter provided consulting services as ER/IR Manager for various industries on fixed term contracts.
